How To Store Your SUP Board?
Proper SUP Board Storage
The time has come! Whether you’re putting your SUP board away for just a short break until the next weekend or storing it for a longer period until summer returns, proper storage is essential. This ensures that you can start the next season in grand style.
Important Tips Before Storing Your Board:
Before storing your SUP board:
- Thoroughly rinse the board, especially if it has been in contact with saltwater.
- Wipe off any sand residue.
- Make sure it is completely dry (you can use a towel).
Remember! Before rolling up the board and placing it in a backpack, ensure it is dry!
Additionally, if you’re storing the board for an extended period, it’s a good idea to conduct a quick inspection. Check for any scratches or other damages that may need repair.
Rigid Board
A rigid board should be stored in a dry place at room temperature, preferably indoors. For convenience, you can install a special shelf or hooks mounted to the wall or suspended from the ceiling. Place the board flat, bottom side down, as if it were on water. A simpler and more cost-effective option is to lean the board against a wall—on its side or tail (back of the board), but never on the nose (front of the board). If leaning the board on its tail, ensure it is secured to prevent it from tipping over and place it on something soft to avoid potential dents.
Remember! Never hang the board by the SUP handle or cargo straps, as this can damage the board!
Inflatable Board
For inflatable boards, you have two storage options: leave the board inflated or roll it up.
Inflatable Board – Inflated
In this case, follow similar steps as with rigid boards. The best option is a dry room at room temperature. It’s important for the board to maintain its natural shape. The previously mentioned special shelves or hooks attached to the wall or ceiling are a good solution. Remember not to place anything on the board—prolonged pressure can lead to permanent deformation.
Important! Just like with a rigid board, never hang your SUP board by the handle or cargo straps. This could damage the board!
If you choose to store your board inflated, it’s crucial to partially deflate it. While paddling, the internal pressure of an SUP board ranges from 11 to 15 psi. When setting the board aside for a while, it’s recommended to reduce the pressure to around 6-10 psi. This doesn'’t alter the board’'s shape, doesn'’t crease the material, and allows the seams to rest.
Storing your SUP board in this way is definitely the safest method.
Inflatable Board – Rolled Up
If you don’t have the right conditions to keep your board inflated, you can simply roll it up and store it in a backpack. This is a safe solution because the material the board is made from is strong and flexible.
A few additional tips:
- Ensure the backpack where you store the board is dry and clean.
- Avoid rolling the board too tightly, as this can cause dangerous creases in the material.
- After rolling, lay the board on its longer side to protect the more delicate edges (sides of the board).
- Keep the board away from radiators.
- Occasionally, if possible, take the board out, inflate it, and check if everything is in order.
Can You Store an SUP Board Outdoors?
While it’s best to store your SUP indoors, you can also take care of it outdoors.
First and foremost, protect it from prolonged exposure to the elements—either by storing it in a backpack or covering it with a tarp. It’s wise to find a shaded area that offers protection from precipitation. Also, remember that storing it in sub-zero temperatures is not recommended.
Factors To Pay Special Attention To:
- Sunlight – UV rays can weaken the material’s durability (causing delamination) or lead to discolouration.
- Moisture – Excessive humidity promotes the growth of mould and mildew, which can damage the board.
- Temperature – High temperatures (above 30 degrees—intense sunlight) can also damage the material (causing cracks, bubbles, delamination).
